Every year, thousands of runners descend on the streets of Cwmafan and the surrounding Afan Valley to take part in one of South Wales's most established and popular road races, the Richard Burton 10K.

For many, it is an opportunity to test themselves against a challenging course, enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Welsh valleys and soak up the wonderful atmosphere created by the local community. For others, it is a chance to raise money for charities and good causes close to their hearts.

But behind the name of this famous race lies a much more poignant story. Its origins have little to do with athletics or sporting ambition. Instead, they began with a tragedy that touched the lives of three young men, their families and an entire community.

A Tragedy That Changed Everything

The story begins on a Sunday evening in the spring of 1981.

Two cars carrying a group of young men were travelling from Cwmafan towards Swansea. They were heading out to enjoy an evening at the cinema, looking forward to watching one of the latest films.

Sadly, their journey would end in tragedy.

One of the cars came off the road on Fabian Way, resulting in the deaths of three young men: Arfon David, Wayne Smith and Christopher Rees.

Their deaths sent shockwaves through Cwmafan and the surrounding area. Three young lives had been lost far too soon, leaving behind devastated families, friends and a community struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

Yet, out of that sadness came an idea that would create something lasting.

From Remembrance Comes a Community Event

In January 1982, family members and friends came together to organise a fun run around the streets of Cwmafan in memory of Arfon, Wayne and Christopher.

It was a simple but meaningful gesture, bringing people together to remember the three young men while raising money for something positive within their community.

The money raised from that first event was used to help build a gymnasium for young people on the Welfare Ground in Cwmafan. Remarkably, that gym is still in use today.

What began as an act of remembrance had already created a lasting legacy, giving something back to the very community that had suffered such a loss.

And so, the foundations of what would become the Richard Burton 10K had been laid.

The Richard Burton Connection

The following year, in 1983, the organisers approached one of Wales's most celebrated sons, the internationally renowned actor Richard Burton CBE, to ask whether he would allow the race to carry his name.

Born in Pontrhydyfen, just a short distance from Cwmafan, Burton was a local boy who had gone on to achieve international fame through his extraordinary acting career, commanding stage presence and unmistakable voice.

Richard Burton agreed to the request, and the event was renamed the Richard Burton 10K.

His brother, Graham Jenkins, also became involved with the race committee.

It was a fitting connection. The race now carried the name of a man whose roots were firmly planted in the Afan Valley, while continuing to preserve the memory of the three young men whose deaths had inspired its creation.

Although Richard Burton's name brought an additional sense of identity and recognition to the event, the original reason for its existence was never forgotten.

More Than Just a 10K

Over the years, the Richard Burton 10K has developed from a relatively small local fun run into a major sporting and community event, attracting elite athletes, club runners, recreational runners and people taking on their very first 10K.

The challenging course takes runners through Cwmafan and the surrounding valley, with its mixture of climbs and descents providing a genuine test of stamina and determination.

It has also attracted some impressive names from the world of athletics, including Welsh distance-running legend Steve Jones and other accomplished international and Olympic athletes.

However, perhaps its greatest achievement has been its ability to retain its community roots.

In 2015, the current organising committee took over the event, continuing its charitable and community-focused traditions. Since then, participation has grown considerably, with more than 2,500 entrants taking part in recent years.

The fundraising achievements have been equally impressive. The race has generated substantial sums for local charities, community organisations and worthwhile causes, with more than £250,000 raised by 2025.

Every year, runners and volunteers give their time and energy to help make the event happen, ensuring that the benefits reach far beyond the finish line.

A Legacy That Continues

What makes the Richard Burton 10K particularly special is that it represents two important parts of the area's history.

On one hand, it celebrates the remarkable achievements of Richard Burton, a man who travelled from a small Welsh valley to become one of the most recognisable actors of his generation.

On the other, it remembers Arfon David, Wayne Smith and Christopher Rees, three young men whose lives were tragically cut short in 1981.

It is important that their names are not lost behind the sporting achievements, impressive finishing times and growing popularity of the event.

The race began because families and friends wanted to do something positive in the face of an unimaginable loss. More than four decades later, that original act of remembrance continues to bring people together, support local causes and provide opportunities for generations of runners.

Perhaps that is the real achievement of the Richard Burton 10K.

It is not simply about who crosses the finish line first, how quickly the course is completed or how many people enter each year.

It is about friendship, community, generosity and remembering those who are no longer with us.

Three young men lost their lives in 1981. Their memory inspired a fun run in 1982. A year later, Richard Burton gave it his name. And more than four decades on, their legacy continues to run through the streets of Cwmafan.

Some races are measured in minutes and seconds. This one is measured in something far more enduring: the difference it makes to a community.
